What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method where you focus on one task for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. After four focus sessions you take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. Short, defined blocks make it easier to get started, and regular breaks keep you fresh over a long day. It works especially well for studying, writing and coding.

How to use

  1. Adjust the focus and break lengths in Settings if you like. The defaults are 25 minutes of focus, 5-minute short breaks, 15-minute long breaks and a long break every 4 sessions.
  2. Press Start and work on one task until the timer ends. An alarm plays and your break begins.
  3. Press Skip to end the current phase early, or Reset to start over and clear your session count.

Frequently asked questions

Why 25 minutes?

It is the default length suggested by Francesco Cirillo, who created the technique. Everyone is different, so feel free to use something like 50 minutes of focus and a 10-minute break instead.

Does it keep going in a background tab?

Yes. Time is measured from when you pressed Start, so phases switch on time and the alarm plays even in another tab. The time left and the current phase also appear in the tab title.

Does a skipped session count as completed?

No. Only focus sessions you finish count, and long breaks are scheduled from that count.

Is my progress saved?

No. The timer and your session count live only in your browser and are not saved anywhere. Refreshing the page starts over.
