URL Encoder/Decoder

Percent-encode spaces, symbols and non-English characters for use in URLs, or decode an encoded URL back to readable text.

Direction

Everything you enter is processed in your browser and is never sent to or stored on a server.

What is URL encoding?

URLs can only contain letters, digits and a few symbols, so spaces and other characters are written as % followed by hex codes, such as %20 for a space. This is called percent-encoding. It is useful for building search links, reading encoded URLs in logs and checking API parameters.

How to use

  1. Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. When encoding, choose whether you are encoding a single value or a full URL.
  3. The result appears as you type. Press Copy to grab it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a single value and a full URL?

A single value also encodes : / ? & =, which is what you want for a query value such as a search term. A full URL keeps the characters that make up the URL structure and only encodes spaces and other unsafe characters.

Spaces show up as +.

HTML forms often encode spaces as +. Keep "Treat + as a space" on when decoding to turn them back into spaces.

Why do I get a decoding error?

A lone % or a % not followed by two hex digits cannot be decoded. URLs encoded with a legacy character set instead of UTF-8 may also fail.
