Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Words are found with your browser's built-in word segmentation. Hyphenated words such as "well-known" count as two words, while contractions such as "it's" count as one.
How are reading and speaking times estimated?
They assume about 238 words per minute for reading and 150 words per minute for speaking (Korean text uses about 500 and 300 characters per minute). Treat them as rough guides.
How is this different from the character counter?
The character counter focuses on length in characters and bytes. The word counter focuses on structure: words, sentences, reading time and repeated words.
