Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between counting with and without spaces?
Counting with spaces includes every space, tab and line break as one character. Counting without spaces includes only the visible characters. Requirements vary, so check which one your school, employer or platform uses.
How are words counted?
Any run of text separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks counts as one word. Hyphenated words such as "well-known" count as one word.
How are emoji and bytes counted?
Characters are counted the way you see them on screen, so flags and emoji with skin tones count as one character. Bytes use UTF-8: English letters and digits take 1 byte, accented letters 2 bytes, Korean, Chinese and Japanese characters 3 bytes, and most emoji 4 bytes.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to or stored on a server, and it is gone when you close the page.
