Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage?
B% of A is A × B ÷ 100, and A as a percent of B is A ÷ B × 100. For example, 20% of 50,000 is 10,000, and 30 is 25% of 120.
How is percent change calculated?
(New - Old) ÷ Old × 100. Going from 80,000 to 100,000 is a 25% increase, and from 100,000 to 80,000 is a 20% decrease.
If I add 20% and then subtract 20%, do I get the original number?
No. 100 plus 20% is 120, and 120 minus 20% is 96, because the second step starts from a different base.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
The difference between two percentages is measured in percentage points. If a rate goes from 2% to 3%, it rose by 1 percentage point, which is a 50% increase.
