What is BMI?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. It is a quick way to check whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height. The WHO classes 18.5–24.9 as normal, 25–29.9 as overweight and 30 or more as obese. Asian guidelines use lower cut-offs, with 23 or more as pre-obese and 25 or more as obese. BMI does not account for muscle mass or fat distribution, so treat it as a guide and talk to a health professional about your health.

Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
Weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For 170 cm and 65 kg, that is 65 ÷ (1.7 × 1.7) = 22.5. In imperial units the calculator converts feet, inches and pounds for you.
Why are there different category systems?
Asian populations tend to have more body fat and higher risk of diabetes and high blood pressure at the same BMI, so Asian guidelines use lower cut-offs than the WHO.
Can children use this calculator?
The categories here are for adults. For children and teens, BMI is judged against growth charts by age and sex, so check a pediatric BMI reference.
Does muscle make BMI higher?
Yes. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people can be classed as overweight. Waist size or a body composition test gives more context.
